Rant from Riverton: "AM for Every Vehicle Act" is flawed - we need a "Future of Radio Act"

AM Radio. It has been around since dirt was new.  For decades, people's lives were made whole through radio in the same way that television did and now these days, the internet.  AM radio brought us Dragnet, the Second World War and then eventually introduced us to the Beatles.  AM radio was the driving force for many years.

First came television, the industry feared AM would be the end.  It wasn't.

Then came FM radio, the industry feared AM would be the end.  It wasn't.

Rant from Riverton: I can relate to Musk's mindset ~ but I don't approve of his tactics.

For the past 72 hours, I have been following the whole Elon Musk Twitter issue with the banning of accounts related to the @ElonJet account that was retransmitting ACARS and other data regarding the position of his private jet as well as the many journalists who have been caught in the gauntlet for reporting on it.

Rant from Riverton: 15 years of HD Radio.. the train has left the station.. but you can still catch it!

Fifteen years ago, an amazing radio technology was first introduced.  Why do so few people know about it and why isn’t its use very widespread?  Yes, I am referring to HD Radio, which just recently celebrated its 15th anniversary.  Still, very few people (outside of the industry) actually know about it or what it does, more or less actually owns a radio to receive it.  So, what happened?

Rant from Riverton: Does ARRL have what it takes to "Dare to Imagine"?

Background:  In the January, 2020 issue of QST, outgoing CEO Howard E. Michael, WB2ITX wrote a editorial, titled "Dare to Imagine".  In response to his soliciation for comments, here's what I had to say:

I had the pleasure of reading your column in the January QST in regards to the direction of the ARRL.

Rant from Riverton: All-digital AM - This generation's radio experiment

When you review through the old history cards of various radio and television stations, you come across many of the experiments in the broadcast radio and television art that have taken place over the years.

Rant from Riverton: My take on the Saga saga

One piece of advice that I have been giving LPFM stations for quite awhile is to remind them that as renewals are coming up, they need to make sure they are complying with the rules because their dialmates are likely taking notes.

Now with the Petition to Deny period open on the first wave of broadcast renewals, we are starting to see the first signs of that note-taking that I warned about.

Rant from Riverton: Why can't LPFM have nice things?

No. It’s not because of the NAB or NPR.  It’s because of the LCRA.

Greetings from a very hot weekend.  The heat index right now is 109. It’s Saturday. The Yankees are up 9-nil over the Rockies at the end of 4 innings.  It’s just too hot to do much else.  Welcome to the Riverton summer from Hell.

Rant from Riverton: My thoughts on the LPFM NPRM

The FCC has finally made public, the draft of the "technical NPRM" that I had been hearing about.  The NPRM (notice of proposed rulemaking) will be considered at the FCC's August 1, 2019 open meeting.  Let's take a look at what we may be getting so far...
