Choosing Studio Technology to produce the studio furniture for the new Hubbard Radio Cincinnati cluster was one of the easier decisions that we made in that project.

Vince Fiola, Studio Technology’s owner, made a trip in person, sitting down with the local staff and development team in the earlier planning stages. He came up with several preliminary furniture designs based on the needs and features requested from our staff. After some revisions and tweaks, we had a solid furniture plan for the 12 studios that were to be built.

Studio Technology created 3D renderings of the studio spaces and furniture. Those renderings were helpful for the programming staff to better visualize the furniture design and how it would look spatially.

During the early stages of the building construction, Vince came back on-site and we did a walkthrough of the studios. He took detailed measurements and marked out where cable conduit wall boxes should ideally be located. He worked directly with our architects and their CAD drawings to ensure the furniture would fit perfectly into each space.

Studio Technology also worked with our interior designer and operations manager on the specific materials, finishes, colors, etc. After the furniture was installed, we had realized we needed to make a couple additions in the on-air studios. Studio Technology was extremely helpful and consulted through what the best options would be. They made it happen.

The furniture look was superb, and its design is very functional. Me and my team enjoyed working with it. Having the ample space inside to manage cabling and the overall easy cabinet access was great. The on-air and programming staff enjoy it daily because they now have a workspace that fits their needs.

We have been very pleased with the furniture from Studio Technology on this project.

Showing proof of a COVID-19 vaccination may be just one requirement the NAB is putting in place in order to attend the 2021 NAB Show in person come October 9 in Las Vegas.

The industry’s chief voice on Capitol Hill for broadcast TV and radio on Thursday left the possibility of a mask mandate open. It says a decision on mask requirements will be made in accordance with the CDC, the Nevada Governor, the Southern Nevada Health District and the Clark County Commission.

That decision will be made closer to the show. But, it signals the possibility that the event, even though it will prohibit unvaccinated attendees from participating, will still require mask use at all indoor events.

As stated above, proof of vaccination will be managed through CLEAR’s free mobile app and Health Pass feature or by a Vaccination Concierge Service before and during the Show.

The holidays, which we all assumed would be fairly normal this year, are just around the corner and unless things get better in a hurry, will be another source of stress in the lives of listeners. The Media Rating Council on Wednesday saw its Board of Directors vote in favor of a suspension of the MRC’s accreditation of Nielsen’s national television service. Perhaps more notably, the MRC also yanked the current accreditation hiatus status designation from Nielsen’s Local People Meter and Set Meter Markets and suspended accreditation for these markets.

Nielsen CEO David Kenny commented on the action in a note to its clients. In short, he’s doubling down on his “confidence” in audience measurement many have questioned.

It’s an OTT platform that says it wants to be the “Netflix of Live, Local, and Free” TV. Now, it is getting a programming boost from Cox Media Group‘s broadcast television stations, thanks to a newly inked agreement.

The VUit ad-support, free-to-access national streaming service will be adding local news channels featuring content from the broadcast TV channels CMG owns in Boston, Atlanta, Seattle-Tacoma, Orlando and Charlotte.

The deal with CMG expands VUit’s local news coverage to “more than 150” of the 210 total markets nationwide, New York-based VUit says.

VUit, competing against online platforms such as NewsON and Haystack News, seeks to attract viewers with more than just news reports and newscasts. For example, it broadcast the 2021 Iditarod Sled Dog Race produced by Gray Television-owned KTUU-2 in Anchorage. In another example, LinnMar High School’s graduation ceremony from Marion, Iowa, was streamed by Gray-owned KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was accessible to those across 65 DMAs.

VUit is owned by OTT industry player Syncbak, led by CEO Jack Perry. He says, “Hyperlocal news is no longer just for those living in the community.  There’s an appetite for these stories well beyond the local broadcasters’ markets. Cox is the perfect partner to amplify VUit’s content offerings, and we’re excited to be able to bring the high-quality content of their local stations to viewers nationwide.”

Marian Pittman, Cox Media Group’s EVP of Content, Product & Innovation, added, “We continue to see enormous opportunity for local news on digital platforms to not only drive revenue but to extend the quality of our reporting reach of hyperlocal news across the country. We’re thrilled to partner with VUit to make this happen.”

In addition to Gray and CMG, VUit has contracts with Cowles Media Co., based in Spokane; Heritage Broadcasting Group; and Morgan Murphy Media.

Cleanfeed introduced an enhanced set of studio tools intended for the use of broadcasters and podcasters.

The tools are housed in the user’s browser, with no requirement for external hardware or software. They include enhancements to Cleanfeed’s Clips feature and a new Player for longer cuts of audio.

“The tools give podcasters and broadcasters the functionality of a professional radio studio, straight out of their laptop,” the company stated.

“Features now give users the opportunity to give their listeners and guests a finished production experience, including the ability to play intro and background music, host a panel show or quiz with sound effects, review music, have guests comment on interviews or even play voxes from the public.”

Cleanfeed promotes its product as providing high-quality remote audio “as if you were in the same studio as someone else,” with low latencies and multitrack recording, controlled via a link in a browser.

Summary and Responsibilities:
The GM is responsible for the strategic and creative vision, and daily operation of Northeast Indiana Public Radio (NIPR) in alliance with NIPR’s overall mission. The GM heads efforts to develop partnerships across the coverage area and ensures financial stability through ongoing fundraising efforts and cost control. The GM leads all aspects of broadcast and digital broadcast and digital programming, including revenue generation, programming, operations, marketing, and staff, while growing the audience to fulfill the goal of becoming an essential local institution throughout Northeast Indiana and the listening area.

This position will build on a brand and image that reflects the potential of Indiana public radio’s market. The GM will transition NIPR to its exciting new location in downtown Fort Wayne, IN and will execute a programming vision to grow diverse, cross-platform audiences including digital and podcasts.

Plans and leads all activities of a public broadcasting operation:
Complies with federal, state, and local regulations, including all Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations.
Responsible for the direction, development, and leadership of staff.
Obtains external funding from federal and state funds, foundations, and major donors; ensures effective membership drives, makes personal solicitations of major gifts and writes grant applications.

Required qualifications and education:

Five years senior management experience in broadcasting or related fields.
Demonstrated ability to manage, lead, and supervise other professionals.
Demonstrated success in leading fundraising and securing external funding and grants.
Experience participating with a Board in strategic planning and decision-making.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion initiatives to ensure creative service to the community and team.
Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Community-focused, passionate about our region, and effective at growing revenue, and philanthropic support.

The GM reports to and supports the leadership expectations of the Board and fosters a culture that inspires excellence, diversity, equal opportunity, and a welcoming work environment. In a stunning and sudden development, Locast — the controversial local TV via IP-delivery service that built its operation around a donation-based model, thus avoiding retransmission consent fees — has suspended operations.

The decision comes less than 48 hours after a New York Federal District Court declined to honor Locast’s request for summary judgment in a case focused on copyright infringement brought against the operation by the nation’s “Big Four” broadcast TV networks.

Tieline has released new firmware that allows its Gateway and Gateway 4 codecs to support Ravenna.

“Ravenna is used widely by broadcasters around the world for discovery and advertisement when streaming real-time IP audio,” the company said. “Integrating Ravenna support facilitates interfacing easily between Gateway and Gateway 4 codecs and Ravenna devices over AoIP networks.”

The announcement was made by Tieline VP Sales APAC/EMEA Charlie Gawley, who said the addition is consistent with Tieline’s support of interoperability among manufacturers. The Gateway platform, he said, now complies with AES67, ST 2110-30, NMOS and Ravenna.

The firmware is free for current users. Info and download are available on the support page.

Tieline highlights its codecs for applications requiring the streaming of low-latency, high-quality audio over wired and wireless IP transport channels and for integrating compressed and uncompressed IP audio streams around the broadcast plant. “The codecs are often gateway devices in IP networks bridging between wide area network (WAN) nodes that may include the broadcast plant, other studios (interstudio links), production facilities and live events,” it says.

Kolesar tells RBR+TVBR there’s a perfectly good explanation, and it involves a request from HD Radio’s parent.
